Tiered Cake Support

14 Apr 2026

Wanting to elevate your cake game in the literal sense?  You have our support!

Mounting the top tier of a cake will require a stable and dowelled foundation in the lower tier to prevent collapse. So it is essential that your foundation is strong and stable.

This is where dowels and boards will come in handy with tiering your next big baking project!

The essential boards to make a tiered cake

There are different types of boards for the base and individual layers.

These include:

  • Drum Boards. These thick (100mm to 12mm) boards are strong and durable boards made of compressed cardboard. They’re the preferred choice of the main display board of a tiered cake because they can support a significant amount of cake weight.
  • Cardboard Cake boards are thing and slightly flexible, but they are super ideal for placing between the layers of your cake.
  • Perforated boards are part of the Loyal system. These boards feature a center perforation that can be popped out. This is to allow the board to slide easily over a central dowel without the need for manual drilling.

Dowels

What are they?

Dowels are the internal pillars of the cake. They’re thick and sturdy, and can’t be cut with scissors. Because of this, you would require a dowel cutter for proper sizing.

Types of dowels

  • Wooden– these are the most traditional and affordable method.
  • Plastic – perfect if you’re looking for different variants of thickness.
  • Central – these are taller and thicker dowels designed to run through the entire height of the cake to allow structural integrity and prevent shifting.

How to mount the top tier of a cake

  1. Prepare your tiers. You want to have the dowels inserted in the bottom tier where to the top tier will rest. Cut your dowels flush with the frosting surface of your cake. While the top tier is ready on its own cardboard cakeboard ready to be popped on.
  2. Spread a small amount of buttercream in the middle of your bottom tier. This will act as a glue, and also mark where you want to rest your top tier.
  3. Carefully lift your top tier and lower onto your buttercream “glue” and ensure that it is levelled.
  4. To finish, you can use icing and decorations to cover the seams between the tiers.

Key Tips:

  • Chill all your tiers before stacking, this will prevent damage to the icing.
  • Make sure your top tier is perfectly level so that you won’t get any leaning happening.
  • Align your tiers by tracing the top tiers footprint on the bottom tier before placing to ensure that they are centered.
