What tools do I need to make a sourdough starter?
- Canning Jar (glass recommended so you can see the fermentation process and progress)
- Silicone spatula
- Scale
- Thermometer
Tips for success
- Use unbleached all-purpose flour, because bleached flour can kill or inhibit the natural yeast and bacteria needed.
- Don’t use high gluten flours as they contain less starch. You need starch to be present in your starter so that the simple sugars yeast and lactic acid bacteria can feed.
- Maintain the temperature by keeping your starter in a warm spot to encourage growth.
- Keep your sourdough well fed by feeding it every 24 hours with fresh flour and water. You will also need to discard half of your start each time to make sure there is a healthy, active balance.
- Be patient. Your starter takes about 7-10 days (sometimes longer) to become fully active.
