The plastic that Poly Dowels are made from has been specially engineered for these to hold weight. Don't risk your cake structure using bubble tea straws. Poly-Dowels are thicker, and stronger due to the unique internal ridges inside the Poly Dowel.

The Poly-Dowels as you see from the picture are not just thicker but have internal ridges for even more support. Other dowels may be prone to collapsing, specifically solid wooden or plastic dowels as there is no where for the cake to go.
