There are so many different boards to choose from: masonite, 10mm compressed cardboard, silver cardboard, it's hard to know what to choose for your project. This breakdown of what we stock will help you make the decision!
Our round silver cardboard boards are 3mm thick and the cheapest option to buy. Although they are fairly sturdy, these shouldn't be used under very heavy cakes. They will bend and warp under the weight. When you've put so much time and effort into making a beautiful tiered cake, don't skimp on the board and ruin all your hard work. They are great to use under individual cakes in a tiered cake, as they come in a range of sizes from 3" to 14" diameter. They are also available in squares which are very popular at Christmas time to put little individual fruit cakes on. So sweet!
Loyal have made cardboard boards with pre cut holes in them, making it even easier to make tiered cakes with a centre dowel! They're only available in rounds at this stage.
Check out how they work:
About 6mm thick, these have been the mainstay in Australian cake decorating for decades. Available in silver, gold, rose gold, black, white and 4 pastel colours, there's bound to be a colour and size that suits your design. They are strong and work equally well under individual cakes in a tiered cake as they do as the display board.
When I first started decorating in 2012, I could only get hold of silver and gold boards, which I always covered in fondant as I didn't like the look of the metallic board under my matte fondant finished cakes. These days, there are several different coloured boards available, making it much easier and quicker to match a board to the cake design. It saves a bit on fondant too!
Fairly new to the market in Australia, these thick boards have been traditionally used in the UK for years. They are lightweight and strong, and you can put a thicker ribbon around the edge if you desire. They are used as the display board for a cake, and come in sizes from 8", 10", 12" and 14" in round and square, white and black!
Very sturdy and very strong, these boards are quite new to the market as well. Although you'd be forgiven for thinking this type of board would be too heavy, they're surprisingly lightweight for their size! I definitely wouldn't use these for individual layers of a tiered cake though. They are available in 10", 12" and 14" and only in white so would work perfectly for the display board for a wedding cake.
These are very trendy boards, made of cardboard and available in five colours: white, pastel pink, pastel purple, pastel blue and pastel green. They only come in 10" diameter, and like the silver cardboard boards, these are not for putting very heavy cakes on. They are great for displaying tarts, cupcakes and sponge cakes on though!
