Colouring Fondant

08 Apr 2026

Only have white fondant available? Good thing it's easy to colour! Here's how you can colour your fondant!

How to

  • Make sure you warm your fondant up first. Kneading it a bit with your hands will soften up your fondant which will then make it easier when you mix in your food colouring.
  • Use gel or paste food colouring. This will give you better colouring without altering the consistency. Avoid liquid colouring as this will make your fondant sticky!
  • Apply small amounts of colour at a time. This allows you to slowly make your way to the exact shade of you want. You can use a small knife of toothpick to do this.
  • Added too much colour? Easy fix! Just kneed in some uncoloured fondant.
  • When it comes to kneading the colour in, you want to be thorough. Make sure you stretch and fold until the colour is evenly distributed without any streaks.
  • Prevent stickiness by kneading in a small amount of corn starch or icing sugar.
  • Want to achieve deep colours? Start with pre-coloured fondant, unless you want to use a significant amount of colouring.
  • Want to avoid stains? Wear disposable food-safe gloves to prevent staining on your skin. Or alternatively, you can place your fondant inside a plastic food bag to knead it, that way you keep your hands AND workspace clean.
  • Give it a rest. When you have your fondant at the colour/shade you want let it have a rest before using. Make sure you wrap it tightly to avoid drying.

Want more texture? Make it marbled!

  • Using a minimum of 2 colours, roll each colour into a ball and then into little sausages.
  • Press the colours together tightly, and start twisting/coiling them together.
  • Once the colours are intertwined, fold you fondant into itself, and knead it the way you would do warming it up.
  • You can now roll out the blended piece of fondant, constantly rotating it to ensure a nice even spread of colour.
  • Check out your marbled masterpiece!

Go for gradient!

  • Create a sunset-style ombre between two colours simply by rolling two colours into sausages and laying them next to each other.
  • Lightly squeeze them together and lay onto your bench.
  • Start rolling them out together and watch as the colours blend into one another creating that beautiful ombre effect.
  • Keeping rolling out your fondant until it is at the right level of thickness.

Voila!

You can make any fondant creation in any colour and in any style to suit your cake!

Have fun making any and every colour you can think of!
